WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College softball team opens Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play this weekend with a series against Heidelberg University this weekend.

The Schedule: The Fightin' Quakers will head to Tiffin for a doubleheader at Frann's Field at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will return to the WC Softball Complex for a twinbill beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Teams: Wilmington and Heidelberg. The Fightin' Quakers enter the weekend with a 1-3 record after falling to Otterbein University, with two of the losses by a single run, in the sole non-conference series of the year. The Student Princes are an even 1-1-1 on the year with the tie coming against Ohio Northern University due to darkness.

The Coaches: Beth Floyd is starting her 14th season as Wilmington's softball head coach. She is the winningest softball coach in school history and is also the College's associate director of athletics. Floyd has led the Quakers to the program's first winning season with a 20-16 record in 2013. Mari Depi is in her third season as Heidelberg's head softball coach. The Student Princes were 9-3 last season under her watch before the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Hitters: A pair of freshmen, Lindsey Carter and Arianna Layne, both had stellar collegiate debuts against Otterbein last weekend. Carter tallied 11 hits in 14 at bats for a .786 average to go along with a home run. Layne carries a .563 batting average into the weekend and has a league-best three home runs and eight RBIs. Bailee Faulkner and Raye Hammond both have at least a .500 batter average for the Student Princes with Faulkner leading the bunch with eight total bases.

The Pitchers: Hayley Suchland has pitched the most innings (11.1) and averages more than one strikeout per inning to go along with a 2.47 ERA. Alexis Stringfellow carries a 5.44 ERA in nine innings pitched. The Student Prince duo of Maggie Hoffman and Riley Cruse have pitched at least four innings and have ERAs at or under 3.00. Cruse strikes out nearly one per inning.

OAC Hitter of the Week: For her performance last weekend, Layne is the reigning OAC Softball Hitter of the Week.

OAC Fan Policy: The OAC President's Council has updated its spectator policy to allow two individuals per student-athlete to attend home contests.

Series History: Wilmington is 8-14 against Heidelberg in the last decade. The team's split last year's series at the WC Softball Complex. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
