Men's Cross Country to Compete at OWU Saturday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College men's cross country team, fresh off a weekend off, heads to Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) for the 2019 OWU Invitational on Saturday.

The Race: The eight-kilometer race will take place at Liberty Park in Powell, Ohio, and is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. A course map can be viewed at the home page link above.

The Teams: Wilmington will be joined by host Ohio Wesleyan along with several other NCAA Division III schools: Ohio Northern University, Muskingum University, Kenyon College, Wittenberg University, Bluffton University, Denison University, Earlham College and Marietta College. Columbus State University will also be in attendance.

The Coach: Ron Combs is in his 24th season as head cross country coach at Wilmington College. A 1993 graduate of Wilmington, Combs was a member of the only cross country team to win a conference title in school history. Also the head track & field coach at the College, Combs led the Fightin' Quakers to two top-10 finishes nationally with a sixth place finish at the 2002 NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships and a seventh place mark at the 2004 Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The Runners: Wilmington placed two individuals in the top five of the Quaker Open on Aug. 31 including Simon Heys and Evan Whitaker. Heys, a freshman from nearby Wilmington High School, took second individually with a time of 16:05.9 in the five-kilometer race. Whitaker, last year's Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Freshman of the Year, logged a time of 16:16.1 to also finish in the top five.
