Bill Wilson

Bill Wilson is in his second year as the Senior Director of Athletics for Wilmington College.    

In just his first year, Wilson oversaw several strategic initiatives to strengthen the Quaker athletic department. He developed a graduate assistant coaching program, which allows for a select number of graduate assistants to continue their education in Wilmington College’s Master of Leadership program. He added three full time coaching positions and oversaw facility improvements including a new sound system in Hermann Court and natatorium and new lights for Williams Stadium. Wilson led the searches for several new head coaches and administrative staff members, rounding out Wilmington’s outstanding athletics staff.

Prior to returning to his home state of Ohio, Wilson served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Montana Western. During Wilson’s tenure leading the UMW athletic department, During Wilson’s tenure leading the Bulldog athletic department, UMW was awarded the NAIA Champions of Character award for three consecutive years. Bulldog student-athletes achieved an overall grade point average of over 3.18 for three consecutive years. Wilson grew corporate partnerships by 75% and secured an all-school agreement with the Under Armour Apparel Company. He also developed the “Bulldog Club” booster club, with over 170 new members in its first year. Wilson developed and oversaw remodeling projects for the Straugh Gymnasium including the UMW Athletics Hall of Fame Room, digital score tables, sound system and new volleyball locker room. He co-chaired the committee to build a new UMW football stadium. Wilson also developed and chaired the Athletics Safe-Start Task Force to deal with the Covid-19 crisis.

Wilson also served as the Director of Athletics at Pratt Community College in Pratt, Kansas. During his tenure as Director of Athletics at PCC Wilson procured an all-school agreement with Under Armour, the first college in the state of Kansas to have such an agreement with Under Armour. Wilson developed and implemented PCC’s first ever athletics website. He also grew the PCC Beaver Backer Booster Club by 100% as well as increased the athletic department operating budget by 20%. Wilson developed and implemented an athletic department policies and procedures manual, including a student-athlete handbook. He oversaw numerous athletic facility enhancement projects, most recently all new cardio and weight equipment in the PCC Fitness Room.
 
Prior to his appointment at Pratt Community College, Wilson served as the Director of Athletics at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Northland College’s NCAA Division III athletics department experienced the most growth the college’s athletic department had seen in over 20 years. Wilson was the architect in the development and addition of men’s and women’s NCAA golf. He was one of the principal members of the development team that re-purposed the college’s swimming pool into a state-of-the-art fitness center. He oversaw the construction of a new softball field press box and gym re-modeling project. He developed the “Varsity Club” Northland College’s first ever athletic department booster club. Wilson established a Student-Athlete Leadership Development program that was a three-phased program that focused on the development of student-athletes academically, socially, and communally.
Prior to Wilson’s appointment as Director of Athletics at Northland, he served as their Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director. In 2010 Wilson led the LumberJills to the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament and in 2012 the LumberJills compiled the nation’s top team GPA (3.70) for NCAA Division III. Wilson has a total of 22 years of intercollegiate basketball coaching experience, including 16 years as a head coach. 
 
Wilson spent three years in Brevard, North Carolina serving as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Brevard College. During Wilson’s three seasons at Brevard he led the Tornados during their transition from NAIA to NCAA division II. Wilson coached Brevard College’s all-time leading scorer Holly Krogman as well as two ICAA NCAA division II ALL-Independent players.

Wilson served as the head coach at Upper Iowa University for nine years. During his tenure at UIU, he became the school’s all-time career leader in wins. His teams defeated five nationally ranked teams, set 37 individual and team records, produced six 1000-point scorers and he coached UIU’s all-time leading scorer Vicky Ringenberg. In 2002 he became the first women’s coach in UIU athletics history to be named coach of the year when he was named Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association District 8 Coach of the Year. Wilson also directed the programs transition from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II. Wilson has recently had four of his former basketball players inducted into UIU’s Athletics Hall of Fame.
 
His achievements as a coach extended beyond the basketball court as well. While coaching at Upper Iowa, Brevard and Northland, Wilson’s teams maintained a 100-percent graduation rate and consistently maintained the highest team grade-point-average of any athletics team. Wilson has also worked as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and as an assistant coach with the Slippery Rock men’s program, which finished the 1989-90 season ranked no. 2 nationally in NCAA Division II.

As an official, Wilson enjoyed a 20-year career as a collegiate baseball umpire. He umpired at the NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College levels. Wilson has umpired in the NCAA Division II Regionals, 2 NCAA Division III Regionals, 6 NAIA Regionals and several conference championships prior to retiring from umpiring in 2008. At each of Wilson’s stops he has served as an instructor in the classroom. An avid fly fisherman, he has taught fly fishing and fly tying for over 15 years.

Wilson, A native of Twinsburg, Ohio, attained his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Eastern Kentucky University and earned his master’s in education and athletics administration from Slippery Rock University. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
