DEFIANCE – Senior Ashley Stockton scored on a penalty kick with less than 10 minutes remaining to give the Wilmington College women's soccer team the 2-1 non-conference victory Saturday in the Purple and Gold Classic at Defiance College.

It was Stockton's (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) first career goal.

The penalty kick was set up as freshman Katie Evans (Leesburg, OH/Leesburg-Fairfield) was taken down on the box.

Junior Taylor Scott (Lynchburg, OH/Lynchburg) scored her second goal of the season, giving the Fightin' Quakers the early lead with a goal in the sixth minute. The lead didn't last long as the Bearcats responded in the 10th minute.

"It was a nice play. We played her through, and she slipped one past the goalkeeper," said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. "We finished from the beginning and seemed to let down a bit (from a finishing standpoint)."

From that point, it was pure domination for the Fightin' Quakers as they outshot Saint Vincent, 21-4, until Stockton finally netted the game-winner. Wilmington held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-1.

"We took a bunch of shots," said Spirk. "We missed some easy ones but we didn't quit. We passed better in the second half, and we just had players miss some chances."

Freshman Brittany Ross (Covington, OH/Newton) made two saves, while facing three shots. Ross anchored a defense of senior Erika Good (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg), senior Morgan Combs (Tipp City, OH/Tippecanoe), sophomore Alyssa Reule (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) and sophomore Mellonee Hall (Beavercreek) that Spirk described as "exceptional."

Wilmington (2-1) travels to Wittenberg 7 p.m. Wednesday to face the Tigers in non-conference action.
