Heartbreaking loss for @DubC_WSoccer

In the span of eight minutes, the Wilmington College women's soccer team went from ecstasy to agony as the Fightin' Quakers lost to Mount Union, 3-2, in overtime Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action on Townsend Field in Williams Stadium.

Mount Union headed home a corner kick in the 95th minute to steal the win.

With the game being played in constant rain, the wind seemingly played a huge factor in the game.

"I think the weather had a lot to do with it," said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. "Playing into the wind was tough for both teams. We dominated the first half, and got a goal. But, we really had chances to score others, and didn't put them away. They had the wind in the second half; they got the tie and got the go-ahead goal. The fact that we didn't give up, and sent it into overtime was big. Losing this way is part of the game, but you have to make your opportunities. I thought we had more opportunities, we just have to put them away."

Wilmington took more shots than the Purple Raiders, 18-11, and had more corner kick opportunities, 7-4. However, Mount Union put more shots on goal – holding an 8-6 advantage.

Senior Erika Good (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) helped send the game into overtime, scoring on a free kick in the 87th minute. It was Good's fifth goal of the season, and Wilmington's second goal off a set piece.

Freshman Hanna Greaney (Dayton, OH/Carroll) scored her second goal of the season to give Wilmington the lead in the 23rd minute. She scored on a free kick from 29 yards away. The score stayed 1-0 until the 66th minute.

Mount Union got the equalizer, and then took the lead in the 81st minute.

Wilmington (8-7-1 overall, 2-4-1 OAC), despite riding a four-match winless streak, still holds the key to the OAC tournament in their own hands. However, the Fightin' Quakers must play their way into postseason on the road. WC travels to Muskingum 7 p.m. Tuesday.

"I guess we will figure out how bad the team wants to play," said Spirk. "This was a tough one to lose, but we still have two games we could win. Again, I thought we played well tonight, we just didn't put away our chances."
