Late free throws send @DubC_LQB to loss

The Wilmington College women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss as Otterbein nailed two free throws with two seconds left to steal the 75-74 win in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court.

"We have been through a lot this season," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "This whole team has been more than any other team I have ever coached. I thought they really, really came together tonight. They gave great effort, all 10 of the them, and I couldn't have asked for anything more from any of them."

Due to injuries, Wilmington dressed just 10 players for the game.

With the game clock ticking away, the Otterbein player jumped toward the basket and was rewarded with the foul call. She made two of three free throws to seal the win.

Otterbein's final three points came from the free throw line on back-to-back possessions, and each time they allowed the Cardinals to take the lead. They also sent the game into overtime with two fourth-quarter free throws with 20 seconds remaining.

Wilmington missed its attempt with four seconds remaining, and after a timeout, Otterbein's three-point attempts hit the backboard and then the rim before falling to the floor.

It was a nip-and-tuck affair throughout the 45 minutes as the game featured 18 ties and 23 lead changes. Wilmington took the biggest lead of the game with five points, while the Cardinals' biggest lead was four points.

Junior Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) and freshman Mackenzie Campbell (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) scored 17 points each with Jefferson pulling down six rebounds.

Sophomore Ellie Kivell (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) added 11 points. Sophomore Emily Smith (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) finished with nine points and seven boards, while junior Mary Moyer (Martinsville, OH/Clinton Massie) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Wilmington (7-15 overall, 4-11 OAC) travels to Baldwin Wallace 3 p.m. Saturday in OAC action.
