BEREA - Junior Mary Moyer's basket with seven seconds remaining helped the Wilmington College women's basketball team earn their first road victory of the season, upsetting Baldwin Wallace Saturday, 55-53, at Ursprung Gymnasium in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
Moyer (Martinsville, OH/Clinton Massie) capped a 13-4 run in which the Fightin' Quakers turned a seven-point deficit into a two-point victory over the final seven minutes. The junior was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field for 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
"Mary had a great game for us," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "She shot the ball well and played her usual solid defense."
While it Moyer that converted the game-winning basket, with an assist from junior Ja'Cole Tabor (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne), it was junior Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) that came up with the biggest play of the game.
Wilmington trailed by three with a minute remaining, Jefferson pulled down the rebound, found an opening, finished at the basket and was fouled on the play. BW's attempt to ice Jefferson with a timeout went for naught as she calmly sank the tying point.
The victory pulled the Fightin' Quakers even with Marietta for the eighth and final spot in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament. The two teams split the season series with each team winning on their home court.
"It was a huge win for us because one, it was against a very good basketball team," said Scheve. "Two, it was our first road win and three, with the effort we put forth in a hard fought loss - I didn't know how we would respond. They answered some questions about themselves today."
In a game that featured seven lead changes and eight ties, the Fightin' Quakers made the final play.
Sophomore Emily Smith (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) scored seven of Wilmington's nine points as WC closed the first quarter on a 9-1 run to open up the game's biggest lead.
The middle two quarters belonged to Baldwin Wallace, and the home team led by two heading into the final quarter. BW extended its advantage to seven with seven minutes remaining before Wilmington snatched the victory down the stretch.
Freshman Mackenzie Campbell (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) led the Fightin' Quakers with 18 points and four rebounds.
Wilmington (8-15 overall, 5-11 OAC) travels to Muskingum 7 p.m. Saturday in OAC action.
