Barrage of threes buries @DubC_LQB

ALLIANCE – The Wilmington College women's basketball team got off the a fast start, but ultimately, they fell under a barrage of three-pointers, and the Fightin' Quakers lost to Mount Union, 93-60, Saturday at the MAAC.

Mount Union connected on 50 percent (16-of-32) from beyond the arc, and outscored Wilmington, 46-21, in the second half. Unlike most games recently, Wilmington didn't control the glass and was rebounded, 44-38. In addition, Mount Union was prolific from the field – making 46.3 percent from the field.

"We came ready to play, and really played well early in the game," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "Overall, they wore us down. A couple things that has been our strength lately, defense and rebounding, were not our strength tonight. We gave up a lot of open shots and offensive rebounds that really hurt us.

Wilmington raced out to an 11-point lead midway through the first period, but the Purple Raiders found their shooting stroke over the final 3:21 of the period. Mount Union hit four three-pointers during the period-ending 16-0 run.

The Purple Raiders took control with a 15-5 run in the opening moments of the third period, and Wilmington couldn't rebound.

Junior Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) and freshman Mackenzie Campbell (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) combined for 33 points and 12 rebounds. Campbell finished with 18 points, 14 coming in the first half, and Jefferson added 15 points – 13 coming in the second half.

"The big thing is to get some other players going with them," said Scheve. "Brittaney got into some foul trouble in the first half with some careless fouls. We have to get better balanced scoring from our other players. They have shown they can consistently score, but they can't carry the load by themselves."

Sophomore Ellie Kivell (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) registered nine points, all in the first half, for Wilmington.

Wilmington (5-8 overall, 2-4 OAC) travels to Ohio Northern 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
