WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College softball team wrapped up its 2019 season by splitting an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader with Heidelberg University on Sunday as the Fightin' Quakers took game one 3-0 and the Student Princes won game two 5-2.
In game one, Wilmington starter Grace Shell was dominant allowing just four baserunners, two via hit and two via walk, in the entire game. The Quakers' offense broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Megan Crager singled to right field, stole second and was driven home by a Hayley Suchland single to right center. An inning later, another two-out rally scored two runs as KenDahl Bowles and Kennedy Clifton hit RBI-singles to left center field and right center field respectively.
Leading 3-0, Shell allowed just one more baserunner over the final three innings to earn her 10th victory of the season. Kaitlin Moore took the loss for Heidelberg allowing three earned runs on six hits.
Neither team recorded an extra-base hit in the game along with no individual tallying more than one hit. Wilmington finished with five hits including the RBI hits from Suchland, Bowles and Clifton. Crager and Allison Pierce also had a hit for the Quakers.
Moore and Stephanie Drapp had the Student Princes' hits.
Heidelberg's offense, which was held in check in game one, struck for four runs in the first inning including a three-run home run from Drapp and a solo shot from Kennedy Conney. Wilmington would cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third on an RBI-double from Suchland and an RBI-single from Micalah Hensley.
Those two runs would be the only two to cross the plate for the hosts, however, as Drapp earned the win and Morgan Daniels tallied a one-out save.
Stringfellow took the loss for Wilmington allowing four runs in one-third of an inning pitched. Mariyah Burkhardt, in her first action on the mound this season, allowed one unearned run on five hits in 6.2 innings pitched.
Clifton, Alecia Kemp and Je'Taysia Johns all had multi-hit games for Wilmington while Conney finished 3-for-4 for the Student Princes. Drapp went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Wilmington finishes its 2019 season with an 18-14 overall record, marking the second time in program history (20-16 in 2012) the Quakers have achieved a winning record. Additionally, the program's 6-12 OAC record is the second-best (8-10 in 2014) record in Wilmington's 19 years in the league.
