WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College department of athletics has announced the promotion of equestrian to varsity status beginning in the 2018-19 academic year. Women's lacrosse will no longer be sponsored as a varsity sport.
"We are very excited to elevate equestrian to varsity status next year," said Vice President for Athletic Administration and Director of Athletics Terry Rupert. "Equestrian has been one of the most popular clubs on campus, and we expect the program to continue to grow and excel as a varsity sport."
IHSA Equestrian Team Coach and Barn Manager Katie Finkes-Turner is excited about the program elevating to varsity status.
"It's an extremely exciting opportunity for our program to be a little more visible to the community and the school as well," Finkes-Turner said. "We have the World Equestrian Center in the back yard, and our program elevating to varsity status next year helps the College's equestrian program continue to grow as the center does."
Due to low roster size, women's lacrosse will cease to be a varsity sport beginning in 2018-19. Any institution has Wilmington College's permission to contact its women's lacrosse student-athletes.
