AUSTIN, TX – Junior defensive end David Henry has been named to the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division III Football team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced today (December 1, 2015).
Henry (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) becomes the first Wilmington College football player since Chad Otte in 2004 to earn a spot on the Academic All-America team.
"David Henry being selected to the Academic All American First Team is a testament to his hard work on the field and also in the classroom," said Wilmington College head coach Stacey Hairston. "This rare acknowledgement hasn't been accomplished here at Wilmington College in over a decade. I am extremely happy for David as his great character and morality represents Wilmington College and the football program in the most positive way."
The junior currently has a 4.0 grade point average in Sport Management Wellness. He is also a member of Wilmington's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Henry was one of five student-athletes on the 48-member team to achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Henry was also named second team All-Ohio Athletic Conference for his on-field exploits. He was second in the league with seven sacks and third with 12.5 tackles for loss, while leading all OAC defensive linemen in tackling and forced fumbles. Henry ranked in the top 20 nationally in forced fumbles.
All first-team Academic All-District winners, eight districts total, moved to the national ballot. The national team is voted on by members of CoSIDA's Academic All-America Committee.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.
Wilmington Sports Information Director Jayson Ameer Rasheed has served on CoSIDA's Academic All-America national committee since 2009.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
