Martensson scores lone goal in loss

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Wilmington College men's soccer team fell to Millsaps Sunday, 4-1, in non-conference action at the Birmingham Southern Classic.

Freshman Niklas Martensson (Torna Hallestad, Sweden/NTI) scored the team's only goal in the 78th minutes from a feed from sophomore Nils Asteberg (Ojersjo, Sweden/Porthalla Gymnasium).

Things started off bad for the Fightin' Quakers as the Majors took the lead in the eighth minute from an own goal. They added to the lead in the 24th minute. Millsaps tacked on a pair of second half goals to double its advantage.

"Millsaps was a very good team with several dynamic players," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "They were able to get behind us early in the game and forced an own goal five minutes into the game. Our youth and inexperience was exposed today and I believe we learned an important lesson on team defending that is essential for us to be successful in the future."

Both teams launched nine shots and both teams committed nine fouls, while Millsaps held the advantage with shots on goal, 7-4.

Lewis noted that captains Asteberg and Jesse Buhrman (Westlake, OH/Westlake) played outstanding tournaments.

Wilmington (1-2) returns to action 7 p.m. Wednesday, traveling to Denison in non-conference action.
