Equestrian Completes IHSA Nationals with Pair of Placements

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania - The Wilmington College equestrian team concluded the final day of the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) National Championships on Sunday.

On Thursday, Ciara Lawson led off the weekend with a seventh-place finish in the Open Division. On Sunday, both Brooke Pitts and Ashley Howard represented the Fightin' Quakers by riding in the prestigious show that less than half a percent of individuals get to compete in. Pitts, showing in the Level I Division, placed fourth while Howard, showing in the Rookie Division, finished 10th.

"We had a great showing at the Nationals this week," said Daren Wright, director of the College's equine program and professor equine business. "By qualifying and showing at the Nationals, it puts a rider in the top 0.4 percent of the country."

It is believed that only two prior Wilmington riders have ever qualified for the nationals. Lawson, Howard and Pitts are the first Quakers to advance to that stage in over a decade.
