BEREA- The Wilmington College women's swimming team opened the 2017-18 season Saturday afternoon with an OAC dual meet against Baldwin Wallace University. The first-year swimmers stepped up, tremendously, to form the majority of various strong relay teams, as well as claim individual event titles. The Fightin' Quakers ultimately fell to Baldwin Wallace, 135-69.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Freshman Maki Leon came out Fightin' in her first collegiate meet. She posted a 2:21.37 in the 200-yard individual medley to claim first-place, and then was just barely out touched in the 500-yard freestyle (5:50.97). Leon joined forces with freshman teammates Hannah Davis, Margaret Hover and senior Samantha Glish (Louisville, KY/Ballard) for a 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet claimed first-place with a time of 1:45.64.

  • In addition to her first-place relay finish, Hover earned second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:10.39 and third in the 100-yard freestyle with a 1:00.25.

  • Davis added a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (27.32), and a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.57).

  • Glish, a usual dominating force for the Fightin' Quakers in the sprint freestyle events, proved this year would be no different. She claimed second in both the 50-yard freestyle (26.62) and the 100-yard freestyle (59.48).

  • Sophomore Alyssa Rogers (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) came out on top for the Fightin' Quakers early in the season, as well, earning second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:15.20.

HEAD COACH TRIP BREEN QUOTES

  • "For our first meet of the season I thought this was a good starting point. Unfortunately nerves always get the best of us at the beginning of the season, so it doesn't really give us true judgement on how ready we are to race. As the season continues we'll settle down and won't make as many little mistakes. In our training we'll continue to work to find a balance, as fitness continues to come along, between work that needs to be done and fine tuning the little things."

  • "Several freshmen on both sides had great meets today! Especially for their first college meet, for them to be able to step up, it says a lot about how things are going to go for them throughout the rest of the season. I'm excited to see how they progress."

WHAT'S NEXT

  • The Fightin' Quakers head to a double dual meet with Wittenberg University and Transylvania University hosted by Transylvania on Saturday, November 4.
