The Wilmington College women's swimming team demonstrated immense strength in a non-OAC dual meet on Saturday against Hiram College. This meet consisted of unconventional events for a collegiate meet, including various 50s of stroke and the 100 IM in addition to the normal 'short' meet line-up. The Fightin' Quakers took home first place finishes in 12 of the 14 events of the meet, including relays. This was the first win of the season for the women, and they won by a substantial margin, 119-66.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Senior Haley Rowland (Fairfield, OH/Xenia Christian) opened the individual portion of the meet in the 800 Meter Freestyle. She finished first with a time of 11:17.13. Rowland also competed in the 400 Meter Freestyle where she finished third (5:22.57).

• Freshman Samantha Harter (Canton, OH/Glen Oak) brought home the next first place finish for the Fightin' Quakers. She finished the 200 Meter Freestyle in 2:51.28. Harter also swam an exhibition 400 Meter Freestyle, she finished that race in 6:02.84.

• Freshman Hannah Houston (Morrow, OH/Wilmington) continued her path of first place finishes this meet by placing first in the 50 Meter Backstroke (32.37) and the 100 Meter Freestyle (1:07.15).

• Freshman Alyssa Rogers (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) finished first in the 50 Meter Breaststroke (38.42) and third in the 100 Meter Freestyle (1:11.54).

• The next first place finish for the Fightin' Quakers came from senior Elyse Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) in the 100 Meter Butterfly (1:17.29). Spraul also clocked in first in the 100 Meter Backstroke (1:20.01) and the 50 Meter Butterfly (34.08).

• Junior Samantha Glish, who has been proving herself a dominate force for the Fightin' Quakers, dominated, yet again, today. Glish finished first in the 50 Meter Freestyle (29.62) and the 100 Meter Breaststroke (1:26.35).

• Senior Kathryn Spitznogle (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville), Glish, Spraul, and junior Savanna Burcham (Urbana, OH/Urbana) teamed up for a 200 Meter Medley Relay which took home first place, as well (2:00.32).

• Houston, Rogers, Rowland, and Glish teamed up for an exhibition 200 Meter Freestyle Relay. Even though this relay scored no points, these women finished first in the field with a time of 2:03.16.

• "We have to take every opportunity to race, practice doesn't replace competition."

• "This was a step in the right direction and we're really excited going into next weekend, the atmosphere of that meet is always a fun one. It's a meet where I let the swimmers decide, for the most part, what they want to compete in, usually events they're considering swimming at the conference championships. It's our last opportunity to compete until January, so it's really something to take advantage of."
