Steffen, Krebs compete at Regionals

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Senior Alek Erwin finished 87th as the Wilmington men's cross country team finished 17th of 35 teams at the Great Lakes Regional meet Saturday at Calvin College. Erwin finished the course in the time of 27:00.7.

"I thought we would have to run a perfect race as a team to finish in the top 15 in the men's race," said head coach Ron Combs. "We nearly pulled it off, finishing 17th. I am happy with the team finish, but a few of our guys struggled. We were never able to put it all together as a team this year. We have to be tougher mentally as a team. We made some progress mentally, but we still have a ways to go."

Junior Myles Corcoran (Clarksville, OH/Clinton Massie) was the next Wilmington harrier to finish, placing 96th in 27:07.7. The other Wilmington scorers were Jake Simpkins (Germantown, OH/Valley), 101st in 27:16.06; Jacob Boehm (Blanchester, OH/McNicholas), 128th in 27:28.4 and Brad Kline (Circleville, OH/Circleville), 139th in 27:41.6.

Only two women - Tricia Steffen and Mary Krebs - ran for the women's team, so they didn't qualify for a score.

"I thought Tricia and Mary both ran well," said Combs. "We are going to work hard as a team to bounce back and compete at a much higher level in the OAC and Regional next year."

Steffen moved up 70 spots from a season ago to finish 75th overall with the time of 23:39.3 and Krebs broke the 26 minute barrier for the first time this season. She finished 173rd in 25:43.0.
