Women's swimming posts two wins

DEFIANCE – The Wilmington College women's swimming team, coming off a seven-week competitive hiatus, posted victories over Defiance (114-77) and Manchester (164-18).

"It seems like such a long time since we had our last meet," said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. "It's almost like the first meet of the year again. Of course it's the first meet of the calendar season, but it feels like the first meet of the season. We've got a lot of training in, and the team had a nice break. But, it feels nice to be back racing.

"Coming off our training trip, and hard week of practice, I was really pleased," Breen continued. "We had a huge group that was sick this week, and that kind of made me nervous. Even kids that weren't feeling well, competed well today."

Junior Rachel Routzong (Urbana, OH/Urbana) won the 100 butterfly (1:08.52) and was a part of two relay victories. She joined senior Jenny Geers (Pickerington, OH/North), junior Rachel Drake (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) and senior Caroline Kruczynski (Grove City, OH/Central Crossing) to win the 200 medley relay (1:36.07).

Routzong then teamed with Kruczynski, junior Colleen Rueppel (Weybridge, VT/Manheim (PA)) and senior Addie Roberts (Franklin, OH/Franklin) to post a win in the 200 freestyle relay.

Roberts won the 200 freestyle (2:11.27) and Geers won the 100 backstroke (1:08.42) to add to their relay victories.

Sophomore Haley Rowland (Fairborn, OH/Xenia Christian) used her improved techniques to win the 500 freestyle (5:58.27) and finish second in the 1000 freestyle (12:30.27)

"Haley was not quite where she wanted to be early in the season and we had a few corrections to her technique, and she really had a nice meet today," said Breen. "It's one thing to work on it in practice, but she did all the things we worked on (in the meet), and that's the kinds of things you like to see as a coach as we get close to the end of the season."

Wilmington returns home to face Mount Union 1 p.m. Saturday.
