Burcham sets another record

AKRON – Four Wilmington College swimming records fell Saturday as the Fightin' Quakers competed in the final day of the three-day Ohio Athletic Conference championships. The men's team tied the best finish ever in the event with a fourth place finish, while the women's placed sixth overall.

"I thought we had a great weekend," said head coach Trip Breen. "We were enthusiastic from wire to wire this season. It's a grueling and long season.  Obviously we go into events expecting success. The seniors have been incredible leaders. We had an oustanding group of seniors."

Senior Mikey Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) wrapped up his OAC career by setting the league and school record in the 200 backstroke (1:51.63). He secured a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA meet. The decision will be made later in the week whether Spraul will compete at the Kenyon Last Chance meet.

It wasn't the only school record Spraul will leave WC with as he established a new 100 freestyle mark leading off the 400 freestyle relay with the time of 22.50. The relay team of Spraul, Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton), David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead) and Mason Harris (Westerville, OH/Central) set a new school record in the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:11.93.

Harris added a school record in the mile, earning All-OAC honors with a second place finish with the time 16:31.02.

Victoria Burcham concluded her career with an outstanding performance at the three-day meet. Setting a school record on all three days, she finished her career by setting a school record in the 200 backstroke by nearly two second. She finished sixth in 2:11.77.

"What a way to finish a career," said Breen. "She really broke through in the 200 this year. I am really excited with her performance. Hard work really pays off."

For the second straight year, the men's coaching staff of head coach Trip Breen and assistants Paula Stewart and Kenny Holter were named Staff of the Year.
