Burcham, 800 free relay sets records

AKRON – The Wilmington College swimming teams brought home an Ohio Athletic Conference championship and added two relays to earn All-OAC honors.

Freshman David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) won his first OAC championship Friday, winning the 100 backstroke (52.90). He backed up his championship by joining senior Mikey Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton), junior Mason Harris (Westerville, OH/Central) and freshman Jason Prible to finish second in the 800 freestyle relay. The quartet earned All-OAC honors by setting a school record with the time of 7:05.72.

"David raced really well today," said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. "To achieve championship status, he went three seconds faster than his lifetime best, which is unheard of."

Harris broke the 200 freestyle twice Friday, first in the morning preliminaries and then in the evening finals. He finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:44.45.

The team of Mikey Spraul, freshman Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton), senior Corbin Hellwarth (Celina, OH/Parkway) and sophomore David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead) combined to place second in the 200 medley relay in a school-record time of 1:34.93.

Not to be outdone by their male counterparts, the women's 800 freestyle relay team of senior Liz Miller (Lebanon, OH/Lebanon), senior Victoria Burcham (Urbana, OH/Urbana), junior Addie Roberts (Franklin, OH/Franklin) and Haley Rowland (Fairborn, OH/Xenia Christian) set a school record with the time of 8:17.21. Burcham broke the 100 backstroke record she set Thursday with the time of 1:01.00.

"Yesterday we had some great swims and we continued to build on that success today," said Breen. "We have some kids get faster, and it's exciting to see. We had some great swims tonight. To have kids gets faster and to do it with fatigue shows their toughness."

Wilmington concludes the three-day OAC championship meet Saturday.
