Women's Swimming falls to UMU

ALLIANCE - Less than 24 hours after competing in an Ohio Athletic Conference meet, the Wilmington College swim teams returned to the pool. The Fightin' Quakers were defeated by Mount Union, 148-113 in men's action and 154-100 in women's.

"I thought from an energy standpoint, the team was amazing today," said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. "The biggest question mark, coming off a meet where we finished late last night, and having to get up and travel to Mount Union, was how would our energy level be today. We swam well and with enthusiasm, it was a fun day.

"It was great to see all of their hard work pay off," said Breen. "For us to swim fast on consecutive days proves that we are ready for the end of the season."

Junior Addie Roberts (Franklin, OH/Franklin) earned the victory in the 1000-yard freestyle (1:39.90) and was second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:44.37). She teamed with Caroline Kruczynski (Grove City, OH/Central Crossing), senior Liz Miller (Lebanon, OH/Lebanon) and senior Rebecca Scherer (Circleville, OH/Circleville) for a great swim in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:51.37).

"Addie had a great day," said Breen. "After recording her in-season best in the 200 yesterday, she was dominant in the 1000 today. I thought she really raced well."

Kruczynski turned in good performances in posting second-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (26.76) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.36).One day after having a hand in three victories, senior Mikey Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) claimed four wins - three individual and a relay.

He was victorious individually in the 100-yard backstroke (52.84), 200-yard backstroke (2:01.22) and 100-yard butterfly (53.27). Spraul teamed with senior Corbin Hellwarth (Celina, OH/Parkway), freshman Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) and sophomore David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead) to claim the 200-yard individual medley (1:39.90).

"He is way ahead of where he was a year ago," said Breen. "When I compare to where he was a year ago, he has been outstanding. Not only is he swimming well, but he is an incredible leader."

It was a "Spraul Brawl" in the 100-yard backstroke as the brothers swept the top three places. Following Mikey was freshman David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) in 56.83 and Erik Spraul in 57.94.

Junior Mason Harris (Westerville, OH/Central), who Breen called 'The Ironman of Wilmington College swimming', spent an incredible amount of time in the pool in the last 24 hours.

After winning the 1000 and 500 freestyles Friday night, Harris added a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle Saturday (10:24.08). He added a second place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.06) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.37).

"His mental toughness is amazing," said Breen. "The team needed him today, and not only does he not complain, but he does it with enthusiasm."

Wilmington returns to the pool 1 p.m. January 25 for their final dual meet of the season, hosting Division II Tiffin.
