Despite recording just one event victory, the Wilmington College women's swimming team turned in a pleasing performance in falling to John Carroll, 128-77, Friday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

"I was really pleased with the swims, and the racing," said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. "We were fighting for positions. When you think about the development of the team – not just the development of the swimmers – but the development of the team, you see them pulling together, racing, finishing races for each other, that is what this about."

Senior Victoria Burcham (Urbana, OH/Urbana) claimed the only victory for the Fightin' Quakers, winning the 100-meter backstroke (1:13.21). In fact, WC took the top three spots in that race with freshman Haley Rowland (Fairborn, OH/Xenia Christian) and sophomore Nicholle Fiore (Dayton, OH/Northridge) finishing second and third in 1:17.01 and 1:17.40, respectively.

In addition to her victory, Burcham was second in the 200-meter individual medley (2:46.42).

Senior Liz Miller (Lebanon, OH/Lebanon) trimmed more than three seconds off her previous career-best in the 800-meter freestyle. She finished second with the time of 10:21.40.

"Liz Miller had an incredible 800 freestyle," said Breen. "When you do anything athletically it's not just the physical, it's the mental, and Liz is doing a great job with her mental job right now."

Junior Addie Roberts (Franklin, OH/Franklin) recorded second-place finishes in the 200-meter freestyle (2:20.67) and the 400-meter freestyle (5:02.42).

Wilmington returns to the pool 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Union.

"We are getting ready for a three-day conference championship meet, so we have to swim two days in a row this week in preparation for that," said Breen.
