Women's swimming falls to Franklin

FRANKLIN, IN – The Wilmington College swimming teams felt the effects of returning the pool less than 24 hours after competing, and fell to Franklin Saturday. The men's team lost 135.5-69.5, and the women's team fell, 174-40.

"You could tell we were tired after our hard fought match with Ohio Northern yesterday," said head coach Trip Breen. "We really need to continue training hard in preparation of our three-day OAC championships. You could tell both teams were holding onto soreness from yesterday."

As Wilmington continues to build toward the Ohio Athletic Conference championships, the Fightin' Quakers are going to swim themselves into better shape.

"We are still relatively new in the season," said Breen. "As we achieve a higher level of fitness, we will be able to swim on back-to-back nights. We had some great races, some incredible swims, but sometimes it's just not there."

Freshman Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) won the 200 individual medley (2:03.38) for the second straight race, and then placed second in the 500 (4:57.85). Senior Corbin Hellwarth (Celina, OH/Parkway) registered Wilmington's other victory, winning the 200 breaststroke (2:25.38) in what Breen called a 'gutsy performance'."

Junior Mason Harris (Westerville, OH/Central) recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:09.69) and the 1000 freestyle (10:29.71).

The best finish for the women's team came as the quartet of Victoria Burcham (Urbana, OH/Urbana), Rachel Drake (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield), Elyse Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) and Caroline Kruczynski (Grove City, OH/Central Crossing). The finished second in the 200 medley relay with the time of 2:00.96.

Wilmington returns to the pool in a double dual meet Saturday at Wittenberg with Transylvania.
