Routzong scores three goals in loss

GREENCASTLE, IN – Junior Rachel Routzong recorded half of the Wilmington goals as the women's lacrosse team opened the 2015 season with a 12-6 loss to Trine Saturday at Reavis Stadium on the campus of DePauw University.

"We played a great first half; probably the best we've ever played," said Wilmington head coach Brett Yenger. "Our defense held them off for most of the game; fought hard until the end. We got some new people some experience which should help us moving forward and got some first-game jitters out. Now we know what we need to work on."

The Thunder scored the first three goals of the game before senior Loryn Bryson (Carlisle, OH/Carlisle) got the Fightin' Quakers on the board with 10:29 remaining. However, Trine answered 22 seconds later to restore the three-goal advantage.

Freshman Jenni Caporale (Louisville, KY/Ballard) tallied her first career goal and Routzong (Urbana, OH/Urbana) scored with 44 seconds remaining to bookend a Thunder goal, and WC trailed by just two at the half.

Trine took control of the game coming out of intermission with five unassisted goals over the first 12 minutes to take a 10-3 lead.

Routzong scored two more goals in the second half, and junior Stephanie Belz (Gahanna, OH/Lincoln) added a goal.

Freshman Megan Wieloch (Canton, OH/Plymouth) allowed five goals with six saves in 18:21 minutes of action, while junior Katie Bennett (Newport, OH/Frontier) allowed seven goals with two saves in 41:39 minutes.

Wilmington (0-1) travels to Hollins 4 p.m. Monday in non-conference action.
