WC falls to unbeaten Blue Streaks

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH – The Wilmington College women's basketball team shot just 30 percent from the field and fell to #18 John Carroll, 72-59, Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action in the DeCarlo Center.

"We played hard, we just could make enough shots," said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. "(The missed shots) were a combination of their defense, but we missed  some point blank layups and east shots. We also had too many defensive mistakes to beat a team as good as John Carroll."

Wilmington falls to 6-7 overall, 3-3 in the OAC, while the Blue Streaks remaining unbeaten on the season at 11-0 overall, 6-0 in the OAC.

Senior Makenzie Wippel (Orient, OH/Westfall) led the Fightin' Quakers with 13 points and six rebounds, while freshman Brittaney Jefferson (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) added nine points and four rebounds. Senior Haley Howard (Uhrichsville, OH/New Philadelphia) recorded a team-high eight boards, but was limited to a season-low five points.

John Carroll scored seven of the first nine points, and never relinquished the lead. The Blue Streaks had a 13-4 run last in the first half to claim its first double-figure lead of the contest. WC pulled to within seven, but John Carroll scored the final four points of the half for an 11-point halftime bulge.

A 23-6 JCU run midway through the second half helped the Blue Streaks open up a game-high 25 point lead, and essentially put the game away.

Wilmington scored 13 of the last 14 points of the game to account for the final score.

The Fightin' Quakers return to the court 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, travel to Westerville for an OAC game against Otterbein.
