Softball knocks OWU from ranks of unbeaten, falls to Drew in extras

FT. MYERS, FL – The Wilmington College softball team felt the agony of defeat and thrill of victory in the same day. In the opener, the Fightin' Quakers allowed two runs in the bottom of the eighth, and then responded with a crucial regional victory.

GAME ONE: DREW 2, WILMINGTON 1 (8 INNINGS)

In a true pitcher's duel, it took until extra innings before either team could dent the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the Rangers had the final say so – scoring twice in the eighth to record the 2-1 victory Wednesday.

Wilmington's Beth Persicano (Knoxville, TN/Cincinnati Turpin) and Drew's Emma Agostini matched zeroes through seven innings. Persicano allowed six hits with two strikeouts, while Agostine surrendered six hits with one strikeout before extras.

Persicano took the loss (0-4), yielding two runs (one earned) in 7 1/3 innings.

Junior Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) scored from third on a passed ball to give Wilmington the lead. Warren had two hits on the day, while sophomore Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field) added two hits for Wilmington.

A one-out double brought home the tying run for Drew in the bottom of the frame, and then three straight singles – the latter two being of the infield variety brought home the winning run.

GAME TWO: WILMINGTON 10, OHIO WESLEYAN 5

Freshman Emily Smith was a queen dominating Bishops - with her bat, her glove and her arm - as Wilmington knocked regional opponent Ohio Wesleyan from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 10-5 win.

With WC trailing by two runs, via two third-inning runs, Smith came up with two-on and two-out in the top of the frame; and she delivered. The first baseman scored freshman Savananh Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington) and senior Jess Clutter (Union, OH/Northmont) with a single into the right center field gap tie the score.

Smith added a two-run double as Wilmington expanded its lead in the fifth. In addition to her offensive exploits, she made two great catches at first to save errors. But, she saved the best for last. Ohio Wesleyan had runners on first and third with one out in the fifth inning.

After getting the putout at first on a groundout, and the run scored, Smith rifled over to third to get the OWU runner attempting to take the extra base. Threat over; game soon to follow.

Freshman Whitney Edwards (Frankfort, KY/Franklin County) added two RBIs, both in the fourth inning, while Warren and Clutter each had RBI. Clutter finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Trautman (3-1) earned the win allowed five runs on five hits with five strikeouts and five walks in 5 1/3 innings. After Trautman yielded back-to-back one-out walks in the sixth, Persicano came in and slammed the door.

Wilmington (3-5) plays St. Joseph (ME) 9 a.m. Thursday and Emmanuel at 11 a.m. to conclude its 10-game trip to Ft. Myers.
