Softball earns split on Day 3

FT. MYERS, FL – The Wilmington College softball team split two games Tuesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Fightin' Quakers opened the day with a 7-0 win over New Jersey City and lost the Nazareth, 3-1.

GAME ONE: WILMINGTON 7, NJCU 0

Wilmington raced out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and cruised to the victory as sophomore Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field) struck out five and allowed two hits in four innings of work. Trautman improved to 2-1 on the season.

Freshman Caitlin Mathews (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) earned the save, hurling three innings of four-hit shutout softball.

Every Wilmington starter reached base, including freshman Emily Smith (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) went 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Junior Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) added two hits and two RBI. Senior Jess Clutter (Union, OH/Northmont) and freshman Savannah Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington) both had two hits for the Fightin' Quakers.

GAME TWO: NAZARETH 3, WILMINGTON 1

Beth Persicano (Knoxville, TN/Cincinnati Turpin) continues to pitch well enough to earn a victory, but the WC offense hasn't quite supported her efforts in the circle. Persicano (0-3) allowed three runs, two earned, over seven innings.

Nazareth scored two runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh for the win.

Wilmington scored its only run in the bottom of the first inning on a throwing error. Trautman, Clutter and Hooper each had a hit in the loss.

The Fightin' Quakers (2-4) plays Drew 1 p.m. Wednesday, followed by Ohio Wesleyan at 3 p.m.
