Softball splits on day 2

FT. MYERS, FL – The Wilmington College softball team earned its first win of the season, beating Pitt-Bradford Monday 13-2 in five innings. The Fightin' Quakers fell to Geneva, 8-4, in their first game of the day.

"Our energy was incredible against Pitt Bradford," said Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd. "It really carried out in our performance. We put ourselves in a big hole after the first couple innings of the first game. I was proud with how the young team played tremendous in innings three, four, five, six and seven. They are maturing every inning and doing a good job."

GAME ONE: GENEVA 8, WILMINGTON 4

Wilmington committed five errors over the first two innings as the Golden Tornadoes did all their damage in those opening innings. Geneva scored three runs in the first, and then used four WC miscues in the second inning to tack on a five-spot.

After falling behind in the top of the first, Wilmington battled back with a big inning of its own. Freshman Whitney Edwards (Frankfort, KY/Franklin County) started with an one-out walk and moved to second on a Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field) single.

Senior Jess Clutter (Union, OH/Northmont) brought home a run with double and senior Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley) added an RBI sac fly.

Geneva miscues allowed Wilmington to score two more runs in the third inning, but that was all of the game's scoring. Sophomore Sydney Kelly (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) recorded an RBI in the inning.

Freshman Beth Persicano (Knoxville, TN/Cincinnati Turpin, 0-2) allowed eight runs (four earned) on seven hits in seven innings with three strikeouts.

GAME TWO: WILMINGTON 13, PITT BRADFORD 2

Wilmington scored in all but one inning, including a huge five-spot in the fifth inning. The Fightin' Quakers pounded out 13 hits with five different players having multi-hit games.

Noggle finished 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Junior Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City), Trautman, Clutter and freshman Savannah Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington) all finished with two hits.

Trautman had a career-high three RBI, while junior Jessie Stewart (Fredericktown, OH/Highland) and freshman Sawyer Hooper (Leesburg, OH/Wilmington) had their first career RBI.

In the circle, Trautman (1-1) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits in five innings of work.

Wilmington (1-3) plays New Jersey City 9 a.m. Tuesday and Nazareth at 11 a.m.
