Softball splits with Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, OH – The Wilmington College softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday with Otterbein at Rike Field.

The Fightin' Quakers pounded out 12 hits to post a 9-4 win in the opener, and then managed just three hits in falling 3-1 in the second game.

"We need to bring the same kind of energy and enthusiasm in the second game as we do in the first, and then maybe our bats will come around," said Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd. "Danielle (Monnier) and Kerrie (Trautman) both pitched outstanding, keeping the batters off balance. They didn't allow too many base runners today."

Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) improved to 10-8 on the season, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits. She added eight strikeouts in the first game, and two more in the second to bringing her total to 116 on the season. Monnier is nine strikeouts away from tying the school's single-season mark she set a season ago.

In the second game, Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field) fell to 4-9 on the season, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts.

Trautman scored the only run of the second game in the fourth inning, scampering home on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City). It seemed like the inning would be a lot bigger as back-to-back hits from Trautman and junior Allie Noggle (Ashville, OH/Teays Valley) were followed by a walk to sophomore Hilary Daria-White (Felicity, OH/Felicity-Franklin) to load the bases with zero outs.

However, Wilmington couldn't find the big hit in the inning, and they didn't threaten again. Monnier had the only other hit in the second game.

Senior Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) kicked off the scoring in the opener with her team-high eighth home run of the season. Wilmington scored in five of the game's seven innings in recording the victory. She finished 3-for-3 with a double, homerun, two runs scored, two RBI and two walks.

Trautman and Warren each had RBI singles in the second inning and Shilling drew a bases loaded walk in the inning as Wilmington opened up a 4-0 lead. The Fightin' Quakers added a single run in the third and two spots in the fourth and seventh innings.

Senior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) was 2-for-5 with a run scored and Monnier was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.

Wilmington (14-17 overall, 5-9 OAC) travels to Heidelberg 1 p.m. Friday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
