Monnier fans 12 in win, WC splits

FT. MYERS, FL – The Wilmington College softball team opened the 2014 season by splitting two games, falling to Clark, 7-1, in the opener, and then rebounded with a 2-1 win over Alverno.

Senior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) was brilliant in the circle in the win over Alverno, allowing one unearned run on three hits with 12 strikeouts.

All of the scoring took place in the fourth inning. A two-out triple and an error accounted for Alverno's only run.

However, Wilmington struck back in the bottom portion of the inning as senior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) led the inning off with a single and moved to second with a sacrifice bunt by senior Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly).

Senior Kaylee Cox (Elgin, OH/Elgin) drove home the tying run with a single, and advanced to second with a senior Olivia Hutchison (Mason, OH/Mason) single. Freshman Olivia Bauer (Willard, OH/Willard), who pinch ran for Cox, scored on a throwing error.

In the opener, Wilmington fell behind early as Clark scored four runs in the third inning off freshman Kerrie Trautman (Hartville, OH/Field). Junior Sarah Maraan (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley), in her first varsity action in the circle, performed admirably in allowing two earned runs on three hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Sophomore Megan Warren (Grove City, OH/Grove City) and Hutchison each had two hits, while senior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) had the lone RBI.
