Simpkins, Sydnor lead men's track

ALLIANCE – The Wilmington College men's track and field team finished seventh of 10 teams in the 2015 Ohio Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Mount Union.

"I felt like we could have done more on the men's side of things," said Wilmington head coach Ron Combs. "We gave up points in a few events that hurt us."

Senior Jake Simpkins (Germantown, OH/Valley View) scored in four events and senior Jake Sydnor (Owensville, OH/Clermont Northeaster) scored in three events to lead the Fightin' Quakers.

"Jake Sydnor ran a great race in a loaded 400," said Combs. "It's crazy to think you can run one of the best times in the country, and finish third in your conference. Jake Simpkins gave everything he had in the 1500, and finished a close second."

The duo was joined by senior Derek Kilgo (Charlotte, NC/North Royalton) and freshman Pierce Burnam (New Richmond, OH/New Richmond) to earn All-OAC honors with a third-place finish in the 1600 relay (3:21.64).

After posting the fastest time in the preliminaries, Sydnor earned All-OAC with a third-place finish in the 400 (48.45). His time is 18th nationally, and the top 19 times/distances earn NCAA berths. There are three meets remaining before the national field is finalized. He added a seventh-place finish in the 200 (22.37).

Simpkins placed second in the 1500 (3:57.87) to earn All-OAC, and added a fifth-place finish in the 800 (1:57.28). He teamed with Tyle Ahle (Bellefontaine, OH/Benjamin Logan), Tony Wydra (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) and Scott Blubaugh (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) to score in the 3200 relay (8:22.09).

Burnam scored in the 400 hurdles (55.8), sophomore Zak Kruer (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) scored in the pole vault (4.6 meters) and Kilgo scored in the 100 (11.1) to round out the WC points.

"I thought Pierce ran a great race in the 400 hurdles," said Combs. "That's a good time for a freshman."
