Simpkins sets meet record as men's track wins Centre Twilight

DANVILLE – The Wilmington College men's track and field team won four events and scored in 15 of 19 events in winning the 17-team Centre Twilight.

The Fightin' Quakers needed to finish at least third in the 1600 relay to win the meet, and quartet of senior Jake Simpkins (Germantown, OH/Valley View), senior Jake Sydnor (Owensville, OH/Clermont Northeastern), senior Derek Kilgo (Charlotte, NC/North Royalton) and freshman Pierce Burnam (New Richmond, OH/New Richmond) left no doubt in winning the relay (3:22.58).

"It was great to see the guys on that relay go out and win to seal the victory for the team," said Wilmington head coach Ron Combs. "It was a good confidence builder for the team heading into the OAC meet."

Simpkins established a new meet record in winning the 800 (1:55.31), and then joined Kilgo, senior Cameron Bridgewater (Indianapolis, IN/Cardinal Ritter), and freshman Tahj Sho-Johnson (Princeton, WVa./Princeton) to finish second in the 400 relay (43.55).

"It was a great run for Jake Simpkins to win the 800," said Combs. "The plan for him was to take control at 500 meters and finish really strong, and he did that."

Sydnor brought home a victory in the 400 (49.41) and Kilgo added a fourth-place finish in the event (50.99). Sydnor added a second-place result in the 200 (22.58). Sho-Johnson added a fifth-place finish in the 100 (11.31).

Burnam continued to score in the hurdling events for the Fightin' Quakers, placing third in the 400 hurdles (56.94) and eighth in the 110 hurdles (16.03). He recorded a second-place finish in the triple jump (12.69).

Sophomore Zak Kruer (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) is continuing to show his versatility, winning his third different event of the outdoor season. He won the long jump (6.43m) and added a fifth-place finish in the pole vault (4.25m). Junior Leevi Stump (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon) was fourth in the long jump (5.94). Alex Tillapaugh (Wilmington, OH/Wickenberg (AZ)) added to the jumping totals with an eighth place result in the high jump (1.78m).

Junior Linden Ayoki (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) scored in two throwing events, placing third in the discus (42.98m) and sixth in the hammer (41.52m). Freshman Kalvin Butts (St. John's, MI/St. John's) was sixth in the javelin (38.62).

Wilmington travels to Alliance, OH Friday and Saturday to compete in the 2015 Ohio Athletic Conference outdoor championships.
