Hawk wins OAC championship

AKRON – The Wilmington College men's swimming team set two new school records as the Fightin' Quakers are currently third after the first day of the Ohio Athletic Conference championships.

Junior David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead) established a new Wilmington College record, and brought home an Ohio Athletic Conference championship, while senior Mason Harris (Westerville, OH/Central) broke his own record in the 500 freestyle.

In the morning prelims, Hawk set the record and tallied a NCAA "B" cut in the 50 freestyle with the time of 20.79. He claimed the OAC Championship in the evening finals with the time of 20.85.

"He has swam well all year long," said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. "He had two great swims today. It was a matter of putting all the small stuff together."

Harris cut more than three seconds off his time in the morning prelims, and finished second in the 500 freestyle (4:43.91). Sophomore David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) was fifth in the event (4:47.42), followed by Cody Nash (Fresno, CA/Kingsbury; 11th, 4:55.31) and Curtis Richards (Defiance, OH/Ayersville; 12th, 4:55.61).

"All the guys that swam the 500 all had nice drops," said Breen. "Mason put together a nice race and did a lot of things well."

Sophomore Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) in the 200 IM, sophomore Jason Prible (Bluffton, IN/Bluffton) in the 50 freestyle, freshman Anton Blomquist (Stockholm, Sweden/Solna) in the 50 freestyle, and freshman Alex Tillapaugh (Wilmington, OH/Wickenberg (AZ)) in the 50 freestyle all scored points for Wilmington.

The quartet of Blomquist, Prible, Hawk and Erik Spraul finished fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.08), while Erik Spraul, Nash, Hawk and David Spraul placed fifth in the 400 medley relay (3:37.02).

Day two prelims begin at 10 a.m. from the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron.
