Men's swimming claims 10 of 13 events

DEFIANCE – It's been seven weeks since the Wilmington College men's swimming team swam competitively, and they responded by winning 10 of the meets 13 races in beating Defiance, 96-24.

"It seems like such a long time since we had our last meet," said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. "It's almost like the first meet of the year again. Of course it's the first meet of the calendar season, but it feels like the first meet of the season. We've got a lot of training in, and the team had a nice break. But, it feels nice to be back racing.

"The men didn't have as competitive of a meet today, but they raced well," Breen continued. "That is one thing you are worried about, nothing against Defiance, but they didn't very many (swimmers) so a lot of time we were racing against ourselves. As a coach, you worry about that, but they were aggressive. There was the same spirit and emotion as if we were in a tight meet, and that is exactly what we wanted to see and that is what we got today."

Freshman Cody Nash (Fresno, CA/Kingsbury) was the lone Wilmington swimmer to pick up two individual races victories, winning the 500 freestyle (5:17.44) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.99).

Senior Mason Harris (Westerville, OH/Central), junior David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead), sophomore David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) and freshman Alex Tillapaugh (Wilmington, OH/Wickenburg (AZ)) all garnered individual and relay victories for the Fightin' Quakers.

The quartet of Harris, David Spraul, Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) and Eric Balash (Canton, OH/Glen Oak) was victorious in the 200 medley relay (1:47.14), while the quartet of Hawk, Balash, Tillapaugh and freshman Wyatt Henderson (Baltimore, OH/Liberty Union) won the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.63).

The individual wins were Tillapaugh (50 freestyle, 24.03), Harris (100 butterfly, 55.44), Hawk (100 freestyle, 51.01), David Spraul (100 backstroke, 57.33).

Junior Curtis Richards (Defiance, OH/Ayersville) returned to his hometown to record a win in the 200 freestyle (2:00.07).

"I think today we might have regressed a little bit in terms of some of the things we learned racing in the first part of the season," said Breen. "But there are things that we will get back quickly; some minor details. That is what this time of the season is about, minor details. We had a great effort, kids were racing well. We were finishing races well, but we have to go back and work on those little things."

Wilmington returns home to face Mount Union 1 p.m. Saturday.
