800 freestyle relay record falls at OWU

DELAWARE, OH - The Wilmington College men's swimming team finished third of five teams at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational this weekend.

"Both teams showed improvements," said head coach Trip Breen. "We showed mental and physical toughness to swim three sessions. We put together a nice meet. We have a bunch of guys swim in-season bests. It showed really toughness to show up and swim fast for three sessions."

The quartet of senior Mikey Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton), junior Mason Harris (Westerville, OH/Central), along with freshmen David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) and Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) shattered the school's 800 freestyle relay by eight seconds with the time of 7:17.62.

"To break a record by eight seconds in-season is nearly unheard of," said Breen.

Senior Corbin Hellwarth (Celina, OH/Parkway) displayed great leadership during his 100 and 200 breaststroke swims. He was fourth in the 200 with the time of 2:19.10, and was third in the 100 with a time of 1:03.40.

Sophomore David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead) dropped 10 seconds off his previous in-season high in the 200 freestyle with the time of 1:50.39.

Wilmington returns to the pool at John Carroll on January 17, 2014.
