Wicks 'special' in the goal in tie

ADA – With one minute remaining in warm-ups, Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis made a lineup change that worked wonders.

Lewis decided to move senior Daniel Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) back to the goal, and Wicks rewarded that decision by making 10 saves as the Wilmington College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Ohio Northern Wednesday at Kerscher Stadium in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

"Ohio Northern is probably the most technical team we've played this season," said Lewis. "Most of the game was played between the penalty boxes. It was a good result for us. We hung in there and played well."

Wilmington got on the board first in the 16th minute as senior Drew Fields (Terrace Park, OH/Mariemont) scored his second goal of the season. Senior Taylor Estes (Reading, OH/Reading) took the throw-in that was headed by senior Martin Holmquist (Karlstad, Sweden/Alvkulle Gymnasiet), and was finally placed in the back of the net by Fields.

While the Fightin' Quakers maintained the lead, Ohio Northern continued to apply pressure on the WC defense. But Wicks was a wall.

"Wicks made several special saves," said Lewis. "He was up to the task."

The Polar Bears were finally able to find the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.

From there each time had excellent scoring opportunities in the overtime sessions as ONU had its potential game-winner hit the post and freshman Joel Yosef (Alingas, Sweden / Alstrommergymnasiet) slightly missed his game-winner.

Wilmington improved to 5-5-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the OAC, while Ohio Northern fell to 7-5-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the OAC. WC travels to John Carroll 7 p.m. Saturday in OAC play.
