Toney scores only goal in loss

GAMBIER, OH – Early goals in both halves was the ultimate undoing for the Wilmington men's soccer team as the Quakers fell to Kenyon in non-conference action, 3-1, Wednesday.

The Lords kicked the scoring off just 90 seconds into match for the lone score of the half. Kenyon continued to put pressure on the Quakers, outshooting WC 8-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
Kenyon pushed its advantage to 2-0 with a goal less than three minutes into the second half.

"You could see that goal kind of deflated us," said head coach Bud Lewis.

However, Nick Toney quickly energized the squad. The transfer took matters into his own hands with an unassisted goal in the 51st minute.

As Wilmington pulled to within one goal, they couldn't get over the hump.

"I think we played as well as we have all season, except in the final third," said Spirk. "It continues to haunt us. We are having a difficult time making decisions in the final third. I thought we kept Kenyon on their heels, but ultimately we didn't have enough dangerous opportunities."

With the Quakers pushing forward in an attempt to score the equalizer, the Lords mounted a counterattack to score the final tally in the 88th minute.

Anton Niklasson took the loss, falling to 2-5, recording one save in the full 90 minutes.

Wilmington (2-5) travels to Danville, KY 7 p.m. Saturday to face Centre in non-conference action.
