LEXINGTON, KY – After being thoroughly outplayed in the second half, Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis gave his team a stern warning.

Consider it message received.

Junior Evan Schlagetter scored less than four minutes into the extra session to boost the Quakers to the 1-0 victory Tuesday over Transylvania at Thomas Field in non-conference action.  

"We are really fortunate to find a way to end the game," said Lewis. "We could have easily lost that game, but we found a way to win. We didn't have our best, for sure. It was nice to come away with a win against a very good team."

While Wilmington lacked the intensity Lewis felt they needed, junior goalkeeper Anton Niklasson was the team's saving grace. As the Pioneers peppered the Wilmington keeper with shot, he continued to turn them away. Transylvania unleashed 15 shots in the second half, including nine the Niklasson saved.

"I don't think he made a save that was really significant," said Lewis. "They had a three or four shots that I thought were definite goals, but Anton was able to tip them away. We weren't very sharp.  In the second half, Transy really turned the switch on and came at us hard.

"They controlled tempo, and it was a situation they really got behind us," Lewis continued. "Transylvania put a lot of pressure on us. We were able to sustain and get the game into overtime."

Even before Schlagetter's game-winner, sophomore Nick Toney nearly won the game minutes early. A last minute save by the Pioneer goalkeeper allowed the game to remain scoreless, at least momentarily.

Wilmington (2-3) returns to the pitch 5 p.m. Friday in non-conference action as the Quakers travel to Earlham.
