Hat trick for Delaney in loss

ALLIANCE – For the second straight game, the second half was the downfall for the Wilmington College men's lacrosse team as they fell to Mount Union Friday, 16-6, in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

The Purple Raiders scored nine of 10 third-period goals, including eight straight to snap a 4-4 tie. Mount Union peppered the WC goals with 16 shots, the most in any period, while limiting the Fightin' Quakers to just two scoring chances. Two of the nine goals came on man-up opportunities.

Freshman Reid Delaney (Wooster, OH/Wooster) tied the game at one with 35 seconds remaining in the first period, and then classmate Nick Perry (Carmel, IN/Carmel) gave the Fightin' Quakers the lead less than 30 seconds into the second period.

After UMU recorded the equalizer with 10:34 remaining, Delaney restored Wilmington's one-goal advantage with 2:22 left. However, the Purple Raiders tallied the tying goal less than a minute later – and the teams went into half even.

Unfortunately, after trading goals in the third period – Mount Union rattled off 11 consecutive to seize control over the course of the third and fourth periods.

Delaney finished with his third career hat trick, scoring goals in each of the first three periods. Sophomore Jalen Jackson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) finished with one goal and three assists.

Wilmington (4-10 overall, 0-3) returns to action 7 p.m. Wednesday at Otterbein.
