Heard goes Down Under

Former Wilmington College men's basketball All-American Malcolm Heard is headed Down Under.

The 2014 graduate will be playing professionally in Melbourne, Australia. He will be playing for a Eurobasket Select Team, the Keysborough Cougars. It will mark a new experience for the 6-5 forward.

"The only time I have been out of the country is a cruise in the Bahamas," said Heard. "So this is going to be a new experience for me. I love to play the game, and getting the opportunity to get paid for it – I couldn't pass up."

It will be the first time Heard will spend an extended period away from his two children.

"That's the rough thing for me right now," said Heard. "The one thing I am trying to put in perspective. I just dropped some stuff off to my daughter at school, and it broke me down. I have been praying on it. It's the right situation for me right now. I feel like its something my kids will understand later on."

He expects to be in Australia for the next six months. The regular season lasts four months, and his team has been to the playoffs in each of the last five years – which could add another two months to his stay.

Heard was named 2014 Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Year after leading the Fightin' Quakers to the OAC championship and a NCAA Tournament berth. He led the league in points (18.6) and rebounds (7.8).

He finished his collegiate career as the school's all-time NCAA-era scorer, and is third all-time in scoring with 1,577.
