WC falls to Yellow Jackets

In a game with four lead changes and two ties over the final six minutes, the Wilmington College men's basketball team came out on the short end of the 65-61 score with Baldwin Wallace Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court.

The Yellow Jackets went 7-of-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch, half of the free throws coming following technical fouls. With Wilmington leading by one with a little over three minutes remaining, a technical following a foul gave BW four free threes, and then technical with the game tied one minute later put the Jackets back on the line for two more free throws. The points boosted Baldwin Wallace to a lead it wouldn't relinquish down the stretch.

Baldwin Wallace senior Kevin Krakowiak was the only Yellow Jacket in double figures, finishing with a game-high 29 points.

"We gave up too many good looks to Krakowiak in the second half especially, and we have to be better about guarding shooters," said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. "We just have to be more consistent on both ends of the ball. I thought at times we were good today, especially defensively against a good offensive team. Offensively we were stagnant, and didn't have the same type of ball movement and player movement that we need. We just have to keep getting better. Come back to work on Monday because as our group knows there is a lot of basketball left, and still a lot to accomplish."

With senior Malcolm Heard II (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) forced to be a spectator after picking up his second foul three minutes into the game, the combination of juniors Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) and Jonathan Bibbs (Dayton, OH/Chaminade Julienne) played well enough for the Fightin' Quakers to take a lead into the break.

Johnson scored all 11 of his points, while Bibbs pulled down seven of his career-high nine rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. Additionally the defensive effort held the Yellow Jackets to just 23.3 percent (7-of-30) shooting. Anyone not named Krakowiak was 3-of-19 in the half.

The second half was much of the same as neither team could really pull away as the biggest lead was a six-point advantage held by Wilmington.

Junior R.J. Leppert (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) led the Fightin' Quakers with 17 points and six rebounds, and Heard finished with 16 points and four rebounds – all in the second half.

Wilmington (13-7 overall, 10-4 OAC) travels to Westerville 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to face Otterbein. WC won the first meeting, 85-67, on January 15.
