Five game winning streak ended

ALLIANCE - The Wilmington College men's basketball team fell two games out of first place as the Fightin' Quakers fell to first-place Mount Union Saturday, 93-80, in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

With one game remaining in the first swing through the conference, Wilmington (9-5 overall) is tied at 6-2 with Marietta in second place. The Fightin' Quakers travels to Ohio Northern 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak.

"We played a very good basketball team and had a bunch of opportunities to stay in the game, and make this a one-possession game down the stretch," said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. "We didn't make enough plays. We didn't guard the three-point line and didn't make free throws."

Mount Union, the league's best three-point shooting team was 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from beyond the arc. In contrast, WC converted just 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from three-point range, and was just 20-of-30 (66.7 percent) from the foul line.

"We let them have some easy looks early," said Hunt, "and with really good shooters, once they get going, the basket gets bigger."

The Purple Raiders went on the game's first major run of the game, a 28-9 run that enabled them to open 14-point lead with five minutes remaining in the half. Five different Wilmington players scored as the FIghtin' Quakers pulled to within three at the break thanks to a 14-3 spurt.

Wilmington continued its momentum by scoring eight of the first 10 second-half points to takes its only lead of the final 20 minutes. Mount Union answered with an 18-8 spurt taking a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Junior R.J. Leppert (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) finished with a team-high 20 points, while senior Malcolm Heard (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) tallied his third straight double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Taylor Wellman (Norwood, OH/Norwood) added 14 points and four assists. Junior Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) dished out a team-high five assists.
