Ransome's career scoring night goes for naught

Junior Klarke Ransome set a career-high with 17 points, but it wasn't enough as Wilmington fell to Marietta Saturday, 64-57, in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court.

Ransome (Richwood, OH/Union) scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half, including a three-pointer that sparked a 12-0 run that had the gym jumped and the visiting Pioneers looking for answers. Those answers were quickly found following a Marietta timeout. The Pioneers scored 11 of the next 13 points to put enough cushion between them and Wilmington.

Wilmington came out blazing from behind the arc as its first four baskets were all three-pointers. Considering the Fightin' Quakers average just 3.8 three-pointers made, they were shooting at epic preportions. They finished with a season-high seven made three's.

Both teams settled in and found their collective ways, but the shooting of the visiting Pioneers enabled them to claim the six-point halftime lead.

Senior Brandon Candella (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) finished with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while junior Taylor Wellman (Norwood, OH/Norwood) tallied a season-high 11 points. For the fifth time this season, sophomore Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) led the team in assists with four dimes.

Junior Malcolm Heard (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington), saddled with foul trouble, was limited to two points on 0-of-3 shooting.

Wilmington (3-4 overall, 1-1 OAC) steps out of Ohio Athletic Conference action as they face the College of Mount St. Joseph 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
