Late run sparks victory

MEADVILLE, PA – Five different players scored in Wilmington's 21-2 run late in the second half as the Fightin' Quakers opened the 2012-13 season with a 69-54 victory over McDaniel Friday in the Greg Richards Memorial Tip-Off Tournament on the campus of Allegheny College.

With the game tied at 51, the Quakers defense took control. Wilmington forced the Green Ferror into eight turnovers in the final eight minutes, holding McDaniel without a basket. The WC pressure defense forced its opponents into 28 turnovers. McDaniel's 28 turnovers turned into 28 Wilmington points.

Early on, it looked as if the Quakers could run away with the contest. Wilmington opened up a 10-point with 3:20 second left in the first half. However, the Green Ferror refused to allow its first game to turn into a laugher.

McDaniel scored eight of the last 10 first-half points, and trailed by just four at half. They added a 12-3 run early in the second half to hand Wilmington its largest deficit of the game at four points. Wilmington's aforementioned 21-2 run came immediately on the heels of the Green Ferror taking its four-point advantage.

Junior Malcolm Heard II (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) led the Fightin' Quakers with 21 points and seven rebounds, while senior Brandon Candella (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) added 18 points and three rebounds.
