OXFORD - As junior Malcolm Heard strolled to the bench with his fourth foul of the game, he seemingly took Wilmington's momentum with him. Miami went on a 17-3 run en route to posting the 84-67 victory Sunday at Millett Hall in non-conference action.

Miami head coach John Cooper acknowledged that Wilmington played harder than his RedHawks, and that WC head coach K.C. Hunt out-coached him.

"We just ran out of gas," said Hunt.

It marks the fourth straight loss for the Fightin' Quakers, who falls to 4-8 on the season. Wilmington returns to Ohio Athletic Conference action 3 p.m. Saturday with a road game at John Carroll.

Senior Brandon Candella (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) drilled a three-pointer with 12:46 remaining in the game to give Wilmington the 55-54 lead. It was the last time the Fightin' Quakers led as it was WC's only basket during the aforementioned Miami spurt.

In addition to Heard (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) going to the bench, a technical foul on the Miami bench seemed to spark the RedHawks almost simultaneously. Heard's fourth foul came on the possession immediately following the technical.

The Fightin' Quakers managed 12 points in those final 12:46.

Wilmington took everything the RedHawks threw at them in the first half, frustrating Miami with a series of backdoor cuts and timely three pointers. The Fightin' Quakers utilized the pressure relieving cuts to shoot 10-of-14 on two-point field goals in first half. WC was just 3-of-11 from beyond the arc in the half.

After an early five-point lead, MU couldn't pull away from the Green and White. Eventually, they built an eight-point advantage but back-to-back baskets from senior Miles Bankston (Cincinnati, OH/Walnut Hills) and junior Ben Vonderhaar (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) along with a three from Candella brought WC to within one. A Miami free throw gave them the two-point halftime lead.

WC is 0-4 this season when trailing at halftime and 0-2 when the rebounding differential is even as both teams recorded 35 boards. In addition, they are now 0-7 when the allow more than 70 points.

There were three lead changes and two ties in the first half as Wilmington owned the paint, outscoring the RedHawks 16-6 over the first 20 minutes. Miami finished with a 24-22 advantage for the game.

Candella finished with 16 points and three assists to lead Wilmington, while Vonderhaar came off the bench for 12 points and a team-high five boards. It was the second time Vonderhaar reached double figures this season.

Bankston added five rebounds, while sophomore Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) tied a career-high with six assists. It was the fourth time Johnson reached six assists.

Heard finished with just four points, marking just the third time this season he failed to reach double figures. It snaps a string of five straight double-figure performances.
