Baseball Hosts Franklin on Thursday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team hosts Franklin College for a non-conference contest at Tewksbury-Delaney Field on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Franklin. The Fightin' Quakers, at 0-5, are still in search of their first win of the year after falling 9-0 at Earlham College on Tuesday evening. The Grizzles are 3-2 on the season having recently defeated Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe Heidelberg University 11-5 on March 1.

The Coaches: The 2020 season continues the new era for Wilmington College baseball team as the head coach Tony Vittorio starts his second season in charge of the program. He most recently served as the head coach at the University of Dayton for 18 seasons. Lance Marshall, also an assistant Director of Athletics, enters his 22nd season as Franklin's head coach.

The Hitters: The Quakers' offense has struggled through five games this season, hitting a .178 clip as a team. Caleb Scott has seven hits and a .389 batting average to go along with a home run. Nick Silvis, Austin Turner and Luke Kleindl also have extra base hits for Wilmington. Ryan Bixler has six RBIs and three home runs for Franklin while Quenton Wellington and Logan Demkobich both hit over a .400 clip.

The Pitchers: Luke Chappie has been effective for Wilmington in two starts this season. Though he doesn't yet have a victory, the Clinton-Massie alumnus carries a 3.75 ERA in 12 innings pitched to go along with eight strikeouts. Cameron Harbert has a perfect ERA in 3.1 innings pitched in relief. Mitch Merica has been the Grizzlies' most effective pitcher to date, carrying a 2.16 ERA with 10 strikeouts in 8.1 innings pitched.

Series History: Wilmington is 3-5 against Franklin in the last decade. The Grizzles won 2-of-3 last season. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
