Voltz sends charges to the win column

CIRCLEVILLE – Pitching less than 30 minutes from his hometown of Mount Sterling, sophomore Cole Voltz threw a gem of a game in helping the Wilmington College baseball team earn their first win of the season.

Voltz (Mount Sterling, OH/Madison Plains) scattered four hits over 7 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts as the Fightin' Quakers defeated Ohio Christian Thursday, 2-1, in non-conference action at Olson Field on the OCU campus.

Sophomore Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) recorded the last four outs of the game to pick up his first career save.

"Cole was outstanding," said Wilmington head coach Dan Cleaver. "He pitched a great game for us, and it's all about his attitude. He is a bulldog on the mound, and he has that attitude that nobody can hit him. He was aggressive and kept the ball low."

In his appearance, Voltz allowed just three runners to reach second base. No Ohio Christian runner made it to third base all game long.

Wilmington's offense wasn't much better as they managed just one bunt single over the first seven innings. However, they strung together a couple hits in the eighth inning to scratch across the game's lone run.

Sophomore Nathan Dean (Nelsonville, OH/Nelsonville York) started the rally with a one-out walk. Following a pop out, junior Dan Conroy (Columbus, OH/Centennial) was able to secure an infield single, and pinch runner Ryan Henning (Cincinnati, OH/Milford) moved to third on a throwing error.

Sophomore Tyler Schrock (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) blooped a check swing single into right field and Henning scampered home with the winning run. It capped a great day at the plate for Schrock, who also worked two walks.

"It's gratifying to see how happy the players were," said Cleaver. "It was nice to get a win and once you get that first one, it makes it easier to get the second one."
