Baseball falls to Ohio Northern

ADA – The Wilmington College baseball team opened Ohio Athletic Conference action by dropping a doubleheader to Ohio Northern, 4-2 and 6-2, Saturday.

Both teams scored unearned runs in the first inning, and it stayed that way until the fifth.

Sophomore Blake Schmidt opened the inning with a double and then freshman Corey Walker walked. However, Schmidt was caught stealing third on the front end of a double steal. Sophomore Clay Cleaver gave Wilmington the lead with a two-out single, scoring Walker.

A single run by the Polar Bears in the bottom of the fifth inning tied the game. Two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning provided the margin of victory.

Walker took the loss (0-3) surrendering four runs (two earned) in 5 1/3 innings. He recorded allowed six hits with six strikeouts and six walks. Cole Voltz and Luke Mattews combined for 2 1/3 inning of scoreless relief.

Sophomore Tyler Schrock was the lone Wilmington hitter with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Ohio Northern tallied six runs over the first six innings before the Fightin' Quakers recorded its first hit – a RBI single by sophomore Alec Hutzelman. The hit scored sophomore Max Ramsey, who had reached on an error.

Junior Russ Neeley brought home another run with a RBI double in the top of the eighth.

Cleaver (0-3) allowed six runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings of work. He gave up seven hits with four strikeouts. Relievers Austin Merkle and Tommy Chamberlain combined for 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Wilmington (0-13) travels to Ohio Christian 4 p.m. Tuesday in non-conference action.
