Baseball swept by Illinois

FT. MYERS, FL – The Wilmington College baseball team was swept by Illinois College Sunday in the Fightin' Quakers' 2014 opener. The Blueboys won the opener 6-4 and took the nightcap, 9-2.

Despite losing both ends of the doubleheader, Wilmington showed flashes of the type of team one could expect under new head coach Dan Cleaver with seven stolen bases.

Junior Russ Neeley (Springboro, OH/Springboro) went 2-for-5 on the day with a double and home run. It was his first career longball, while senior Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) went 4-for-6 with two RBI.

Unfortunately, Arehart wasn't as effective on the mound as he was at the plate. He took the loss in the opener, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with five walks over three innings of work. Starting pitching struggled for WC as sophomore Billy Foster (Xenia, OH/Xenia) surrendered seven earned runs in 3 2/3 innings in the nightcap.

While the starters weren't as effective as hoped, four different relievers combined to allowed just two runs on 6 1/3 innings.

Freshman Ryan Henning (Milford, OH/Milford) had his first multi-hit game, going 3-for-3 in the second game of the doubleheader. Sophomore Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) added two hits as Wilmington scattered 11 hits in the second game.

Wilmington (0-2) faces Newbury in a non-conference doubleheader Monday.
