Errors costs Wilmington in sweep

FT MYERS, FL – The Wilmington College baseball team committed eight errors Monday as the Fightin' Quakers were swept, 5-2 and 7-3, in a non-conference doubleheader to Newbury.

The miscues allowed Newbury to tally eight unearned runs on the day. Sophomore Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) took the loss in the opener, allowing three runs (one earned) in 5 2/3 innings. Sophomore Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) yielded seven runs (three earned) in six innings, allowing two hits with six strikeouts. He also hit two batters and walked three.

Wilmington scored two unearned runs, one in each the first two innings, to account for their scoring in the opener. Walker recorded the lone RBI in the opener. Walker, in the second game, was the only player to record multiple hits – going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

In the nightcap, Newbury had the leadoff off runner reach in four of the six innings, and all four times it came around to score.

Blake Schmidt (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) and Tyler Schrock (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) each had an RBI in the nine-spot in the second game.

Wilmington (0-4) plays one nine-inning game 10 a.m. Tuesday against Augustana.
