Baseball falls to Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD - In a game that featured 11 errors and 14 different pitchers, the Wilmington College baseball team fell to Wittenberg, 13-7, in non-conference action.

After the Tigers scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first, Wilmington got that run back as Alec Hutzelman (Centerville, OH/Centerville) scored Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen) from third with an unearned run.

The Quakers took advantage of some miscues and inability to find the strike zone to tack on three more runs in the third inning. Bryce Bean (Lees Creek, OH/East Clinton) started the inning by reaching on an error, and scored on a Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) double. Hunter Justus (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) followed with an RBI single, and back-to-back walks had WC threatening for a huge inning with bases loaded and no out.

However, consecutive strikeouts put a huge inning in peril. Then Max Ramsey (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) rescued a portion of the inning with a two-out single that scored one, but another runner was thrown out at the plate.

Undeterred, Wittenberg quickly answered with four runs in its part of the third inning. The teams traded two-run fourth innings and the Tigers blew the game open with a four-run sixth inning.

Justus finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Cameron Schwalbach (Circleville, OH/Circleville) also registered two RBI. Arehart, Ramsey and Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) all had two hits for the Quakers.

Tyler Schrock (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) fell to 0-3 on the season yielding five runs (three earned) in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Wilmington (4-17) returns to Ohio Athletic Conference action when the Quakers host John Carroll 1 p.m. Saturday.
